SUMMARY:Soil Health: Root Zone Rescue! Building Better Soil with Cover Crops
DESCRIPTION:Farmers have a saying that “the secret’s in the soil”. Come learn how you can use cover crops to restore and sustain healthy soils. \n\n\n\n\nThis workshop at Village Family Farms is a part of our Soil Health Workshop series and will explore the benefits of incorporating cover crops into your farm or garden. This workshop is designed for small-scale farmers and gardeners looking to harness the power of cover crops to improve soil health\, suppress weeds\, enhance biodiversity\, and boost farm resilience. Participants will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to successfully integrate cover crops into their farming systems\, regardless of their experience level. \nWe hope you can join us! \n**This event is outdoors on a working farm where you will be surrounded by nature. Ground and terrain may be uneven on the farm. We recommend comfortable shoes\, sunscreen and a hat.** \nThis workshop will take place rain or shine. In cases of extreme weather\, we will contact you 24-36 hours prior to the event if we need to cancel.

SUMMARY:Plant Science Basics Series: Part 2 - Soil Health & Structure
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your gardening understanding by exploring plants from the inside out in this new\, in-depth 3-part series of classes for adults. \n\n\n\n\nIt’s not ‘dirt’… it’s soil!\nNHG proudly welcomes back teacher Iman Jones for a special hands-on series. \nNEW! Soil is more than just dirt. It’s a living\, breathing ecosystem essential to plant success and human life on earth. In this second session\, beginner gardeners will build a deeper understanding of what makes soil fertile\, how its components interact\, and how to recognize healthy soil using their senses. Participants will also explore the essential roles that microbes\, fungi\, and other organisms play in supporting plant health. With a focus on the soils typical of the North Texas growing region\, this class equips students to protect and improve their garden’s foundation naturally and intentionally. \nWhat You’ll Do: \n\nParticipants will receive note taking guides to help them follow along and document their learning.\nNext\, we’ll move from presentation and discussion to hands-on soil sampling and a macro-to-microscopic exploration of the world under our feet.\nWe’ll end our time together with interactive Q&A so that every participant leaves with the knowledge that they need to garden Victoriously.\n\n$10. What to bring: A writing utensil and curiosity! All other supplies\, including optional gloves\, are provided. \nYou’ll be a mad scientist for the day and leave understanding what your plants need\, and more importantly\, why.\nCOMING UP :\nPart 3: Watering: How\, When\, & Why – Saturday\, October 10th\nNOTE: This event is indoors in our comfortable Classroom\, and is best for adults. Before the event\, you are invited to drop by our Ralph & Rose Cafe next door for a cool coffee\, tea\, or treat before the event\, and shop with us afterward. \nIman Jones: As the leader of Victory Gardens\, she designs and leads workshops\, coaching sessions\, and experiences created to reconnect people to the living world. Iman built Victory Gardens Dallas in 2020 to help city dwellers find their footing in the natural world. A Master Gardener with a BS in Biology and 8+ years in STEM education\, Iman has guided 400+ gardens into existence across DFW\, and counting. \nVictory Gardens: Victory Gardens installs raised garden beds across DFW: delivered\, planted\, and ready to grow. Every bed comes with the option of a Grow Coach\, so your garden gets stronger over time instead of fading while you learn the ropes. We also offer garden design\, consulting\, and educational programs for those who want to go further.
