DESCRIPTION:Join the Suburban Biodiversity Conservation Center for an exploration into the amazing world of soil science!\n\n\n\nFor this program the SBCC is delighted to host Dr. Perl Egendorf\, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and Science at Pace University\, and their Mobile Soil Lab! \nThe Mobile Soil Lab was created for the scientific laboratory to exist as a public space. The lab seeks to make the concepts\, methods\, procedures\, insights\, and applications of science transparent and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds\, particularly people who have been systemically and historically excluded from academic science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM). While the lab can focus on any media\, we choose to focus on soils. Soils are the skin of the Earth\, the vital interface between living and nonliving systems\, and a (literally) fertile medium for engaging with biogeochemistry\, systems science\, and environmental justice. While soils are vital\, they are often under-appreciated and over-exploited. Urban soils are particularly degraded\, contaminated\, and deserving of far more attention and care. As such\, the Mobile Soil Lab focuses on urban soils and composts and can be used to analyze these media on site for a range of biological (color\, nutrients\, respiration)\, chemical (metals\, pH\, salinity)\, and physical (texture\, structure\, bulk density) properties. Come put on a lab coat and conduct these analyses with us! No prior background is needed – in fact\, no prior background is preferred.

Cole earned a PhD from UC Berkeley in 2024 at the intersections of soil science and agroecology. Cole’s study of seed\, soil\, and liberative practice have taken many forms: conducting soil ecology surveys\, conspiring with monarch butterflies to re-imagine the commons\, creating land-based educational programs\, conducting performance art pieces with seedlings\, and supporting mutual aid efforts across the Bay Area. \nzai wang (they/she) is an interdisciplinary naturalist whose background is in Soil and Watershed Sciences. Formerly a USDA-NRCS Soil Scientist\, zai has worked with farmers and land conservancies to survey land and map soil types to support conservation land stewardship practices. They have gained a wide breadth of ecologic knowledge from mapping Anza Borrego Desert State Park\, working with soil microbial reduction in subaqueous soils with the Wetland Pedology lab of the University of Maryland\, and surveying permafrost soils in the remote Copper River Basin\, AK. zai is excited to increase equitable access to knowledge of land by supporting soil sampling and site surveys for farmers\, community projects\, and home gardeners. \n\nFAQs \nWhat do I do if I cannot afford the suggested donation? \nWe encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means\, and in an amount that feels powerful to you – such gifts make workshops like these possible. Together\, we can increase autonomy in our care for the soils that we depend on for our livelihoods! \nIn Part 1\, Foundations of Soil Science\, we will learn the basics of soil science\, understanding how physical\, biological and chemical properties affect soil health. We will run field tests together to get hands-on experience with different soil properties. \nIn Part 2\, Land-based Soil Health Stewardship\, we will discuss how to steward our soils\, including planting cover crop at the farm\, understanding the principles of soil health\, and how to work with the soil microbiome. \nTICKETS: Please register for each day that you plan to attend.\nSuggested Donation: $32 for one day ($64 for both days) – no one turned away for lack of funds. As a 5th-generation Californian and a descendent of early settlers\, Cole is committed to a lifelong practice of rematriation and reparations. They believe in the radical power of Earth stewardship to heal communities\, reclaim ancestral traditions\, and lead us towards collective liberation. Cole earned a PhD from UC Berkeley in 2024 at the intersections of soil science and agroecology. Cole’s study of seed\, soil\, and liberative practice have taken many forms: conducting soil ecology surveys\, conspiring with monarch butterflies to re-imagine the commons\, creating land-based educational programs\, conducting performance art pieces with seedlings\, and supporting mutual aid efforts across the Bay Area. \nzai wang (they/she) is an interdisciplinary naturalist whose background is in Soil and Watershed Sciences. Formerly a USDA-NRCS Soil Scientist\, zai has worked with farmers and land conservancies to survey land and map soil types to support conservation land stewardship practices. They have gained a wide breadth of ecologic knowledge from mapping Anza Borrego Desert State Park\, working with soil microbial reduction in subaqueous soils with the Wetland Pedology lab of the University of Maryland\, and surveying permafrost soils in the remote Copper River Basin\, AK. zai is excited to increase equitable access to knowledge of land by supporting soil sampling and site surveys for farmers\, community projects\, and home gardeners. \n\nFAQs \nWhat do I do if I cannot afford the suggested donation? \nWe encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means\, and in an amount that feels powerful to you – such gifts make workshops like these possible. DESCRIPTION:Oregon State University’s Agriculture soil expert Nan Xu demonstrates how to collect and prepare a soil sample with a soil probe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a closer look at the foundation growing your food\, flowers or pasture! OSU Assistant Professor of Practice in General Agriculture\, Nan Xu will lead us through a hands-on demonstration on how to use a soil probe to collect a soil sample\, and discuss how to determine the best timing\, depth\, and locations for collecting representative samples. Nan will also lead a hands-on texture analysis and talk about the soil test kits—such as N-P-K strips and moisture meters. These can be engaging tools for home gardeners\, however\, we’ll discuss what they can and can’t reliably tell us. A list of regional soil testing labs will be provided with guidance on choosing the right lab and analysis package based on the participant’s needs. This is part one of a four-part series.
