SUMMARY:Virtual: SWCS - Role of Nutrient and Water Management in Climate-Smart Soil and Water Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Register\nPresenters: Deanna Osmond\, North Carolina State; Lisa Duriancik\, USDA NRCS/CEAP  \nClimate-smart agriculture has come to the forefront as an approach to simultaneously increase agricultural productivity\, while enhancing resilience to climate impacts and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. This concept integrates well-known conservation strategies such as cover cropping\, agroforestry\, nutrient management\, and conservation tillage. Climate-smart agriculture has gained attention recently through legislation and increased funding directed at tackling this complex issue. Yet conservationists and researchers may be asking – what do I need to do to make my program “climate-smart”? Implementing a climate-smart initiative requires addressing the agroecosystem in a holistic way to incorporate technology and delineate solutions to productivity\, profitability\, and environment – all while remaining within the lens of climate resilience and adaptation. In this webinar\, presented by the SWCS Science and Policy Committee\, we will explore the multidimensional aspects of climate-smart agriculture. Experts will share their ideas on where climate-smart agriculture is going and how conservationists and researchers can integrate this perspective into their current work. In this session (a follow-up to the June webinar) presenters will address the importance of nutrient management\, as well as water management\, when planning climate smart agriculture to maximize benefits and minimize off-site losses of nutrients in the practical implementation of climate-smart conservation agriculture.

SUMMARY:Virtual: SWCS - Role of Nutrient and Water Management in Climate-Smart Soil and Water Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Register\nPresenters: Deanna Osmond\, North Carolina State; Lisa Duriancik\, USDA NRCS/CEAP  \nClimate-smart agriculture has come to the forefront as an approach to simultaneously increase agricultural productivity\, while enhancing resilience to climate impacts and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. This concept integrates well-known conservation strategies such as cover cropping\, agroforestry\, nutrient management\, and conservation tillage. Climate-smart agriculture has gained attention recently through legislation and increased funding directed at tackling this complex issue. Yet conservationists and researchers may be asking – what do I need to do to make my program “climate-smart”? Implementing a climate-smart initiative requires addressing the agroecosystem in a holistic way to incorporate technology and delineate solutions to productivity\, profitability\, and environment – all while remaining within the lens of climate resilience and adaptation. In this webinar\, presented by the SWCS Science and Policy Committee\, we will explore the multidimensional aspects of climate-smart agriculture. Experts will share their ideas on where climate-smart agriculture is going and how conservationists and researchers can integrate this perspective into their current work. In this session (a follow-up to the June webinar) presenters will address the importance of nutrient management\, as well as water management\, when planning climate smart agriculture to maximize benefits and minimize off-site losses of nutrients in the practical implementation of climate-smart conservation agriculture.

We will examine the traditions that have both built and challenged our ability to advance the conservation movement while exploring the new and necessary capacity\, innovation\, and partnerships needed to regenerate our land\, water and other natural resources. \nThe conference will assemble a diverse\, multigenerational conservation community of researchers\, practitioners\, industry leaders\, farmers\, and students from around the world in Des Moines\, Iowa\, where the Soil and Water Conservation Society was founded 78 years ago and is still headquartered today. The agenda will feature the latest ideas\, technologies\, and practices\, and foster a dialogue around their adoption. Through workshops\, sessions\, symposia\, tours\, exhibits\, and demonstrations\, cutting-edge research and practice developments in soil health\, water quality\, and resource management will be shared. Scientists and practitioners will present their work at the field\, farm\, and watershed scale across an array of private and public arenas. Applications of social theories and examples of successful outreach and education will enable attendees to identify ways to scale up localized successes. Participants will also hear about policy and economic developments that build a framework to increase conservation adoption and support future generations.

DESCRIPTION:78th SWCS International Annual Conference\nAugust 6-9\, 2023\nCommunity Choice Credit Union Convention Center\nDes Moines\, Iowa \nThis year’s conference theme\, “Healthy Land\, Clean Water: Cultivating a Legacy of Conservation\,” challenges us to envision the world we want to leave for those who follow us. At this year’s event\, we will share successes and embrace lessons learned so that we can move toward our natural resource goals with greater speed\, efficiency\, effectiveness\, and inclusivity. We will examine the traditions that have both built and challenged our ability to advance the conservation movement while exploring the new and necessary capacity\, innovation\, and partnerships needed to regenerate our land\, water and other natural resources. \nThe conference will assemble a diverse\, multigenerational conservation community of researchers\, practitioners\, industry leaders\, farmers\, and students from around the world in Des Moines\, Iowa\, where the Soil and Water Conservation Society was founded 78 years ago and is still headquartered today. The agenda will feature the latest ideas\, technologies\, and practices\, and foster a dialogue around their adoption. Through workshops\, sessions\, symposia\, tours\, exhibits\, and demonstrations\, cutting-edge research and practice developments in soil health\, water quality\, and resource management will be shared. Scientists and practitioners will present their work at the field\, farm\, and watershed scale across an array of private and public arenas. Applications of social theories and examples of successful outreach and education will enable attendees to identify ways to scale up localized successes. Participants will also hear about policy and economic developments that build a framework to increase conservation adoption and support future generations.
